Author Spotlight — LoRee Peery ( + Giveaway )

What do you enjoy most about writing? The deep-seated answer is knowing God wants me to write. I absolutely love it when ideas spark at odd times, for example, during a shower. Most of the time I don’t know what my next project will be. Once in a while a sequel will implant itself as I’m still writing one story, and I’ll start taking notes. For various reasons, I usually don’t work on deadlines except those I give myself. I finish one project before beginning another. Some days, as in working on the middle of a story, I’ll type “I don’t know what to write.” It’s so sweet to watch the characters take over, and equals pure bliss as I live in the mind of a hero or heroine, without “trying” to write.

What can readers expect from you next? I have three contracted projects with White Rose Publishing, which is the romance genre of Pelican Book Group. One is Courting Country, with a Cyrano de Bergerac premise starring an older heroine and hero. Here’s what I call my forty words: Kylie figures online dating is her last chance at finding love. Friend Taggart loves her from afar, and agrees to pen messages from another old friend whom Kylie is interested in. Will she see Taggart for who he really is?

Once upon a time I had a time travel dream. I rarely remember my dreams but this one stayed with me, and I may have even dreamt it before I started writing for publication. In the dream, a woman walks upstairs in a country house and opens a door. Kapow! She steps into the old West. I never forgot it and it made me wonder if I could ever write anything historical. Then I saw an old barn and the seeds of Cowboy Just in Time took root. My forty words: An event planner falls through a barn loft floor and finds herself in 1890. The cowboy embodies the man of her dreams. He wants her to stay. She needs to leave. Is their love enough to span the ages?

In that first story Phoebe, the rancher’s daughter, is not a very likeable character. She has redeeming qualities and kept raising her hand to be heard. So Phoebe’s story is the sequel called Future of My Heart, where she comes forward in time. A rancher’s daughter forfeits her first love to a woman from the future. A lighting tech is flummoxed by the beauty who appears on his western movie set. Can his love and middle-class lifestyle keep her in this century?

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?  Reviews get books noticed. Only a few words of what you liked or didn’t like about a story affect algorithms in the cyber world. Word of mouth or mentions on social media are valued just as much as reviews.

FIRST PAGE of “Hiding from Christmas”

Monte licked the envelope and tapped it on the desk in his bank office as the call connected. “Hi, sweetheart. I have a surprise for you.”

“Hi, yourself. You excited about something?” Calissa sounded distracted.

He’d probably interrupted her work, but he was about to give up on helping her see life from his point of view. “I am. I’ve taken off the afternoon to celebrate our December thaw. Set aside your thimble. Wash the glue off your hands. Dress warm, and I’ll see you in half an hour.” He wished she still lived close to downtown, but he loved her country apartment off Highway 77 south of Fremont.

She sputtered.

He knew Calissa well enough not to give her a chance to make an excuse. Outside the bank, he loosened his scarf. Too warm in the sun.

Twenty minutes later, he inhaled the aroma of spicy meatballs, Calissa’s favorite menu item from Pop’s Place.

Demure smile in place, she met him at the door.
