Foot and Mouth Disease — June Foster

Today I’m thrilled to welcome June Foster as she shares some great thoughts worth pondering.

Put your foot in your mouth. I’ve heard this expression all my life. I decided to Google it and discover its origin. The phrase dates back to 1870 and relates to the foot and mouth disease, a deadly virus found in cattle. Then the phrase was applied to humans whose verbal utterances got them in trouble.

Hmm. A deadly virus. I have said things I later regretted but never compared the words to a deadly virus.

“For, whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.” 1Peter 3:10

There’s another thing about my mouth I don’t like. All the food it eats. Oh? You say it’s not my mouth’s fault? Gulp. Anyway, I don’t like the extra servings that go in and put those extra pounds on me.

So, my mouth frequently gets me in trouble, and I need the Holy Spirit’s power to overcome it. I know. I’ve tried it on my own and failed.

“But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Galatians 5:16

Lord Jesus, I pray that every word that comes out of my mouth will please you. I am powerless on my own. Please be God over my life. Allow me to eat just what my body needs and no more. Your word says in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit, and You desire for us to honor You with our bodies. In Jesus name.
