Author Interview Questions:

  •  What inspired you to write Burning Ridge?

Burning Ridge is the fourth book in my Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. When my publishing team set up a brainstorming session to find a title for my third book (Hunting Hour), someone suggested Burning Ridge. It wasn’t a fit for the third book, but my publisher thought it would be a fantastic title for the next book in my series. He could even imagine the cover that his designers would create. When he asked if I could write a book to match it, I said, “Sure!” I loved the title and the ideas it sparked, but soon I realized that it shouldn’t be just trees burning up on that ridge. How about a body?

Here’s the cover flap description of the book:

On a rugged Colorado mountain ridge, Mattie Cobb and her police dog partner Robo make a grisly discovery—and become the targets of a ruthless killer.

Colorado’s Redstone Ridge is a place of extraordinary beauty, but this rugged mountain wilderness harbors a horrifying secret. When a charred body is discovered in a shallow grave on the ridge, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner Robo are called in to spearhead the investigation. But this is no ordinary crime—and it soon becomes clear that Mattie has a close personal connection to the dead man.

Joined by local veterinarian Cole Walker, the pair scours the mountaintop for evidence and makes another gruesome discovery: the skeletonized remains of two adults and a child. And then, the unthinkable happens. Could Mattie become the next victim in the murderer’s deadly game?

A deranged killer torments Mattie with a litany of dark secrets that call into question her very identity. As a towering blaze races across the ridge, Cole and Robo search desperately for her—but time is running out in Margaret Mizushima’s fourth spine-tingling Timber Creek K-9 mystery, Burning Ridge.

  •  How did you get started writing mysteries?

My husband is a veterinarian, and years ago one of his clients who trained patrol and protection dogs brought a dog for a health exam prior to transfer to the US Forest Service. Drug smuggling through the national parks in Colorado was on the rise, and rangers planned to combat this problem with narcotics detection dogs. My husband passed on this bit of information to me at lunchtime, and the premise for my Timber Creek K-9 mystery series was born: The merchants and ranchers in the Timber Creek community purchase a narcotics detection dog for the county sheriff’s department. Enter K-9 officer Robo, his handler Deputy Mattie Cobb, and his veterinarian Cole Walker.

  • What can readers expect from you next?

Burning Ridge will release September 11, 2018, and there will be at least two more books in the series after that. I invite you to join Mattie, Robo, and Cole in this next Timber Creek K-9 adventure.
