Years ago, the idea for Pendant came from a newspaper article that reported how local authorities were investigating the background of an elderly woman who showed up at an assisted-living center with only her purse, a jacket, a cane, and her medical card as ID. She was alert, pleasant and chatty, but refused to give any details about her past. Intrigued, I’ve played with ideas for the story over the years since then, but writing a suspense novel was a bit of a surprise—especially for my husband who, in thirty-five years of marriage, had never noticed my interest in the darker side of life.
You can imagine his reaction as I quizzed my son-in-law (a hunter and EMT) on the type and caliber of gun needed to kill someone on the other side of a restaurant window, as well as the procedure for emergency personnel in the aftermath.
“Can we please talk about something else?” he pleaded. “This is Thanksgiving, after all.”
Later, while I wrestled with another story problem, my husband encouraged me to talk with a friend of his, a former police chief who still puts on the uniform occasionally when needed. We met early one morning, and I explained that I had a character who was planning to kill someone and dispose of the body. I needed suggestions for how and where to do so around our local area.
We spent the next thirty minutes discussing where bodies have been found around our locale, along with various ways of disposing of them. All the while, my poor husband listened in disbelief that his sweet, gentle wife was talking about disposing of dead bodies. At one point, my interviewee looked at him and joked, “If anything happens to you in the near future, we’ll know who to look for.” Thankfully, my husband has survived, but my characters had a rougher time of it.
The main character, Elaine, is a middle-aged former teacher who lost more than her job when one of her students disappeared from a Chicago field trip and was never found. Haunted by the shame and guilt for more than a decade, Elaine finally stumbles onto a vital clue, only to discover that someone will do anything to keep the truth buried.
When her life is threatened, she allows the one person she trusts to whisk her away to safety in Texas. But assuming a false identity and hiding among the quirky residents of a retirement home is not what she had in mind. Now, Elaine must solve the mystery from afar, as soon as she figures out if her neighbor is keeping her from danger…or keeping her from the truth.
Author Interview Questions:
- 2 or 3 fun or unique things about you?
I had the unique privilege of growing up at a youth camp, and my first books comprised a series for young teens loosely based on my experiences there.
I have no imagination when it comes to cooking. When I make my first million dollars, I’ll hire a cook before I hire a maid. (I’m not holding my breath on this one.)
- Favorite vacation spot?
We live across the country from most of our extended family, so our vacations are usually spent visiting them in IA, MN or WI. I love the upper Midwest, especially if there’s a lake nearby.
- Describe yourself in three words.
A covert rebel. I rarely make waves, but if I’m opposed to something, I’ll find a way to secretly get around it.

Monsters under the bed never bothered author M L Hamilton. What kept her awake was the man hiding in her closet. She never figured out his identity or how he managed to hide in her messy closet. But since then, she has imagined all sorts of other scary situations, which she hopes will inspire more mystery/suspense stories.
When not writing, she enjoys knitting, spending time with her family, and a little amateur photography.
